Gridiron 11.12.06: Mark Your Calendars

Yes, it’s been far too long… Between school and a few other things, time has really been flying by. Now that I’m back, let’s get to it:

  • Unfortunately, November 18, 2006 is a whole week away. After surviving Ball State last weekend, Michigan came out with authority against Indiana, winning 34-3. Now we can finally focus on this coming Saturday. It’s been circled on my calendar for a few weeks — #2 Michigan at #1 Ohio State. It just doesn’t get any better. The last game of the season, the two top ranked teams (both undefeated) fighting for a chance to play for the BCS Championship — buckle your seat-belts.
  • Michigan State fell to 4-7 with a 31-18 loss at the hands of Minnesota. Honestly, now that we know John L. Smith will no longer be with the Spartans after this season, I don’t see much of a point of watching. After all, the “How Long Can John L. Last?” Game is all over now. It’s almost disappointing in a way…
  • The Lions followed up a great win over the Atlanta Falcons with a loss to the 49ers today. A late surge by Detroit was unable to overcome the deficit, and the Lions are now 2-7. What really killed the Lions today was time of possession. San Fransisco had the ball for over 38 minutes, or nearly twice as long as the Lions did. It really looked like the Lions weren’t even trying to stop the run for at least the first half. Not to mention Roy Williams guaranteeing 35 points from the offense before the game… I guess he didn’t count on the defense being so lackluster. Still, we almost came back. Business as usual for the Lions, who are now all but eliminated from any playoff hopes.

  • [...] The impact of rankings this week were chaotic. Saturday’s games produced the most upsets and shake-ups in a long time. The Rutgers are definently one of the shakers baking Louisville’s chances of a National Title. Louisville wasnt the only team that got its hope baked; Texas was robbed of all its cattle when Kansas State came in. Not only did they lose hope for the title they lost their rising, talented quartback, Colt McCoy. Who would have thought the last play of the game would have been a kneel-down by Kansas quarterback Josh Freeman? Is Ohio State and Michigan safe or will their hopes be baked like a Thanksgiving Turkey? By the way, watch Notre Dame climb the polls. [...]
