Center Court 10.26.06: Pistons Survive Preseason

  • With a 92-82 loss to the Grizzlies last night, the Pistons finished up their preseason. They may have lost the game, but the important thing is that there were no major injuries during this preseason, so the Pistons should be ready to go for next Wednesday’s season opener against the Milwaukee Bucks.
  • Jason Maxiell and Carlos Delfino both had their options picked up, keeping them in Detroit through 2007-08. From the little action I saw this preseason, Jason Maxiell was very impressive. He goes out and plays hungry and with an intensity I rarely see from young post players. As for Delfino, he can play if he applies himself on the defensive end of the court. It seems as though every time I start to believe in him, he starts dogging it on D — if he wants to get in my good graces, he better move his feet when the other team has the ball. [Detroit Bad Boys]
  • The Pistons waived Rick Rickert and Rob Griffin. I think it’s safe to say that they had slim chances of making the team entering training camp. [Pistons.com]
  • NBA General Managers have voted, and they’re putting their money on the San Antonio Spurs to win the championship this season. Oh, and a fellow named LeBron is the favorite for MVP. [ESPN]
  • David Stern wants the players to leave their guns at home. Oh, goodness, the whole headline is amusing. Apparently his statement was in response to our friend Stephen Jackson, who, earlier in the preseason fired his gun at least five times into the air outside an Indianapolis strip club in part of an altercation that also involved someone attempting to run him over with their car… [FSN]
  • Will Smith and Dr. J are part of a group trying to buy the 76ers. I’d say that they would be “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It,” but the Sixers don’t look like they’ll be getting jiggy with much this season, though they could put themselves into winning shape with a few additions to the current team of Allen Iverson and Andre Iguodala. [ESPN]
  • The Seattle Supersonics and the WNBA’s Storm have been purchased by a group headed by some guy from Oklahoma City. However, they say they will try to get a new arena in Seattle first. I would be surprised if the Sonics didn’t move. [ESPN]
  • The 2006 Photo of the Year Winner at NBA.com has been selected, and it’s a nifty block by Ben Wallace. The victim? Shaquille O’Neal. Even if it is Big Ben, the picture is still more than relevant. Plus, the camera angle is really neat. [NBA.com]
