- Without Steve Yzerman, somebody else had to be the captain for the Red Wings for the first time in nearly 20 years. That person is defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom, who has some huge skates to fill. The assistant captains are Kris Draper and Henrik Zetterberg. While I completely think Lidstrom is the man for the job, it just isn’t right for someone other than Stevie Y to be “The Captain.” There will never be another like him. [BtJ]
- While I spent the majority of last evening watching the Tigers, I did see the Red Wings score their ninth goal of the evening. No, that’s not a typo — the Wings beat the Coyotes by a final score of 9-2. Mathieu Schneider had three goals and an assist, Mikael Samuelsson had two goals, and Pavel Datsyuk had a goal and two assists. There was a whole slew of other Wings that put up at least a point in this one. [FSN]
- Red Wings center Greg Johnson, 35, has announced his retirement after he was diagnosed with a heart abnormality during his training camp physical. [ESPN]
