- Placido Polanco said that he would not return this season after Sunday’s game. Jason Beck quickly got down to the bottom of things, and heard from Dave Dombrowski that Polanco is still on track for a return this season. My local newspaper was quite disappointed — they think the Tigers are struggling without Polanco. Yeah, and we started to struggle before he went down. Losing one player can’t be the sole factor in a team’s near self destruction. As you all recall, I have not yet pushed my panic button. [Tigers.com]
- Speaking of the panic button, we just don’t need to press it. The Tigers picked up a series win over Baltimore this weekend, and even if the White Sox lose only one game in the upcoming series, they’ll still be four games behind with 10 games left (says Wayne Fontes. I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt and not fact-checking that). Panic? I think not. Heck, the Tigers even took yesterday’s loss into extra innings. They have shown signs of life, so now we can wait and see what happens. This is really exciting! After all, the last time the Tigers were actually worried about losing out on the playoffs… Well, I can’t remember the last time. [The Wayne Fontes Experience]
- The West Michigan Whitecaps (aka the home of Cameron Maybin) won the Midwest League Championship. Oh, and Toledo also won their championship. The Tigers could be in for a long stretch of winning baseball if they keep their farm systems in tact. Just look at the Atlanta Braves. Their streak is finally over, but not before over a decade of winning their division and frustrating us all with their bottomless barrel of pitching prospects. [Detroit Tiger Weblog]
- The Tigers called up Chad Durbin and Mike Rabelo from Toledo, and designated Colby Lewis for assignment to make room. [Beck's Blog]
- As an avid-Yankees hater, I feel that I am obligated to inform you that the Red Sox took three games out of four from the Yankees in New York this weekend. I’ll just omit that despite the series win, the BoSox are still 9 1/2 games behind the Bombers… The Yankees’ magic number is four. [FSN]

I too hate the Yankees, and was glad to see the BoSox get revenge for the 5-game massacre that ended their 2006 playoff hopes.
As for the Tigers, they better get going, because yesterday’s 7-0 loss isn’t very promising. Polanco may not be the guy to help them; the starting pitching is what needs to get back on track. They are still a safe 5 games ahead of the ChiSox, but the Twins are 1/2 a game back.
Losing the division would be a major upset, but losing a playoff spot might send Jim Leyland into 4 months of voluntary solitary confinement.
For the record, I hope the Twins and Tigers both make the playoffs, and the ChiSox miss the postseason.
