Center Court 9.2.06: Shock Come Alive Late to Even Finals

  • Things were looking grim for the Detroit Shock. They were absolutely miserable in game one of the WNBA Finals, and were trailing game two by six points after three quarters of play. Then, the roles were reversed. The Shock and their fans led a surge to take game two with authority, tying the series at one game apiece before it moved to Sacramento. Deanna Nolan led the charge with 21 points, and Swin Cash chipped in with 11 points and 8 rebounds. Cheryl Ford was plagued with foul trouble, holding her to just 5 points and 8 rebounds. Still, the Shock were slow out of the game, and finished the game with a ridiculous total of 21 turnovers, however, they were able to hold the Monarchs to 32% shooting, which became the difference in the game.   • After falling to Greece in the FIBA semifinals, team USA was able to take the bronze medal in the consolation game by defeating Argentina 96-81. Dwayne Wade scored 32 points, and Argentina was hampered by foul trouble to several of its players, including Manu Ginobili. The United States trailed for the entirety of the first half, that is, until Carmelo Anthony hit a three pointer to give the boys in blue a 50-49 halftime lead. The United States outscored Argentina by 14 points in the second half to win the game by a final score of 96 to 81. [SI]
  • The Detroit Shock’s Cheryl Ford was named to the All-WNBA Second Team. Lisa Leslie was the leading vote getter, earning her another appearance on the First Team. [WNBA.com]
