- Dmitri Young has made his return to the Tigers lineup, giving Detroit a valuable left-handed hitter. D.Y. made a splash in his first game in two months on Friday night against Oakland; Young went 2-for-4, including a huge 2-RBI single in the fourth. To make room for Dmitri, infielder Ramon Santiago was sent down to AAA-Toledo. Santiago is a fine young infielder, but he wasn’t getting the playing time he needed anyway.
- The Oneonta Tigers, a single-A affiliate of Detroit, won a game that lasted nearly seven hours and took 26 innings on Thursday. The game was tied 1-1 going into the 26th and final inning before the Tigers scored five runs in the final frame to take the game. Deik Scram, the Oneonta center fielder, went 1-for-12 on the day, dropping his batting average 29 points. His one hit? A 2-RBI single in the 26th. In case you were wondering, the record for a professionally played game was a Triple-A matchup that lasted 33 innings.
- Mike Maroth threw a small simulated game, and is continuing to rehab his left elbow. Upon his return, Jim Leyland may opt to go with six starters for at least one time through the rotation. Zach Miner deserves to stay in Detroit, but Maroth was also dealing before his injury, so letting them both have a few starts would be great. You can never get enough rest for your arms, particularly the arm of Justin Verlander, who is on pace to throw 200 innings, which is well above the number of innings he’s ever thrown.
- The Daily Fungo Podcast had an excellent interview with FSN Detroit play-by-play man Mario Impemba in this episode. Mario discusses how he ended up being a broadcaster for the Tigers, and his daily routine. Also your usual analysis of how much better this Tigers team is than the ones that took the field in previous years.
