Tigers Keep 3; Florida Fire Sale

  • The Tigers were able to come to terms with three starters from last season’s AAA Mud Hens. Alexis Gomez, Kevin Hooper, and Mike Hessman helped Toldeo win the International League Championship, which was Toldeo’s first since 1967.
  • Everyone must go! The Florida Marlins sent first baseman Carlos Delgado to the Mets for first baseman Mike Jacobs and two minor leaguers. The Marlins also sent $7 million to New York to aid the Mets in paying the remaining $48 million on Delgado’s contract. This past season, Delgado hit .301 with 33 home runs and 115 RBIs.
  • Marlins ace Josh Beckett was sent to the Red Sox with third baseman Mike Lowell. But they didn’t come without a price. Boston had to part with reliever Guillermo Mota in addition to four minor league prospects. Without Delgado, Beckett, and Lowell, the Marlins payroll has already been slashed from around $60 million to about $27 million for 2006.
  • The Mets traded away outfielder Mike Cameron to the Padres, from whom they will receive Xavier Nady. Cameron had a career high batting average in 2005, before being injured in a horrific collision that broke his nose and an orbital.
  • Friday, the White Sox and Phillies finished their deal, in which the White Sox will acquire first baseman Jim Thome in exchange for center fielder Aaron Rowand, a minor leaguer, and a player to be named. The trade will allow the ChiSox to re-sign Konerko at first base, and play Thome at DH after the departure of Frank Thomas.
  • Hideki Matsui re-signed with the Yankees to the tune of four-years and $52 million. This is gettting pretty sad. Now the Yankees are overpaying to retain players that aren’t even as good as some of the Tigers. Think about who the Tigers have in the outfielder, how low their salaries are, and how overrated Matsui is.
  • According to a baseball source, the Blue Jays and closer BJ Ryan have reached an agreement on a five-year contract that will end up paying $47 million. If signed, Ryan’s deal will become the largest given to a reliever, surpassing the contract of Mariano Rivera from 2001-04. Ryan went 36/41 in save opportunities with the Orioles in addition to a 2.43 ERA in the 2005 season.
  • Rogers Centre (Toronto) and Wrigley Field (Chicago) are both undergoing renovations. Rogers is getting a wider concourse, and changes to Wrigley’s bleachers add an additional 1800 seats.
